Old Neighborhood

Because I had told Tiffany about my blog, she went off and bought me
one of the locally-made hot dogs, an Old Neighborhood. Not the most
appealing name for a hot dog but it was a mighty tasty footlong. Next
time I go back I'll have to get an idea of what it's made of--tasted
like a pork hot dog without a natural casing, steamed. Thanks Tiffany!

I bought some natural casing Old Neighborhood franks from the deli department at Hannaford yesterday. The package didn't list the ingedients or anything, but so far they seem comparable to Hofmann's (Syracuse, NY) natural casing franks. They have the a comparable "snap" when you bite into them, and the flavor also seems comparable...but I would be better able to judge if I tasted them side by side instead of relying on memory, even though I just had some Hofmann's a couple days ago. LOL. I've had some other brands of franks that claim to have natural casings, but some of them don't "snap" when you bite into them. Some day soon, I will check out prepackaged Old Neighborhood beef franks from the hot dog section of Hannaford, which don't claim to have natural casings. It's amazing how something as seemingly simple as a hot dog can have so many variations. Trying each kind has been a real adventure.

Thanks for the info on the Old Neighborhood hot dog, jimmer! Since my post I've seen them in the store but haven't had the time to investigate the ingredients. When a hot dog is steamed I've noticed that, with a natural cased dog, the steaming method of cooking negates the "snap", so I couldn't say which style of Old Neighborhood I had at the ballpark. Thanks again for the great bit of information!
